Partners for Health
Partners for Health was funded under a Center for Disease Control REACH Demonstration grant and was one of only two awarded nationwide to develop and implement replicable and scalable systems and environmental improvements to reduce disparities in obesity rates and hypertension among Black and Latino residents.
CHC brought together public agencies and clinics to provide 17 Los Angeles Unified School District schools (11 elementary, 3 middle, and 3 high schools), with 32 physical activity and nutrition education programs offered by 11 resource providers as well as create a referral system for those who failed their Fitness Gram.
This collaboration also resulted in the development of the Healthy Kids Zone (HKZ) concept to create a framework for improving health by elevating health and safety standards around high-need schools in South LA. On March 31, 2015, the Los Angeles City Council officially approved the Plan for a Healthy Los Angeles, in the process adopting a health element to the general plan that included CHC’s Healthy Kids Zone (HKZ) as a citywide initiative to improve health and well-being. CHC was able to draw upon extensive data, analysis and community feedback in order to generate the final policy report that encompasses the HKZ concept.
Mobile food vending is a component of the HKZ guidelines. The Street Vendor Legalization and Student Nutrition in South Los Angeles Health Impact Assessment Report was created and offers data and recommendations for decision makers to consider when deliberating the merits
of legalizing mobile or street cart vending within the City of Los Angeles.
