Mothers Rising for Guaranteed Basic Income

Project Overview
Mothers Rising for Guaranteed Basic Income is a transformative initiative launched in April 2024 to empower 100 mothers and their families in South LA who have long been excluded from wealth-building opportunities. The program is grounded in the principles of social justice, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1967 advocacy for guaranteed basic income as a direct and effective solution to poverty during a time of civil unrest and racial reckoning. Guaranteed basic income provides unconditional cash payments with no strings attached and no work requirements. Through this program, participants receive $500 per month for at least two years. They also benefit from access to Community Navigators, who connect them with local resources and providers, as well as regular distributions of diapers and wipes. What makes this initiative unique is its holistic approach. Beyond cash disbursements, participants can engage in empowering activities designed to support their personal and professional growth. These include public speaking and storytelling workshops, financial literacy sessions, and other wrap-around services tailored to their needs.
What We’re Tracking
Every 6 months, participants will be asked to participate in data collection surveys and/or focus groups. Our researchers will analyze the effects of guaranteed income on the following indicators:
- Improved financial health
- Stress and wellbeing
- Childhood experiences
Participation in the research component of the program is optional and not a requirement for participants to receive the guaranteed income and additional services.

Why Mothers Rising for Guaranteed Basic Income?
Rising Communities’ Mothers Rising for Guaranteed Basic Income is designed to support mothers living in South LA with children between the ages of 0-5. Unlike other social groups, mothers in South LA have been systemically excluded from wealth creation strategies. In the study “Price of Motherhood” conducted by Rising Communities in 2020, in partnership with UCLA, 85% of mothers reported having a monthly shortage of $443; 77% of respondents stated that financial stress impacted their mental health while 12% said they had no hope for the future of their children. These findings further contributed to a growing body of research nationwide around the potential benefits of guaranteed basic income as a benefit to people living in the United States. Mothers Rising for Guaranteed Basic Income will provide direct support to mothers, giving them greater control over their lives and finances, leading to improved health and well-being for themselves and their children.
The Regional Task Force members serving on the Best Start Region 2 South LA Decides Initiative voted to fund the Mothers Rising for Guaranteed Basic Income. The Best Start Region 2 South LA Decides initiative puts the power back in people’s hands by ensuring that residents can participate in the design and decision-making process to distribute funding to organizations and projects working to increase the health and well-being of children aged 0 – 5 living in South LA and Compton. The Regional Task Force (RTF), comprised of eight elected residents and four elected alternates from across South LA and Compton, elevates local issues affecting all of Region 2 by developing recommendations to increase systems-change impact and stewarding community-based, participatory grantmaking. Participatory Grantmaking is a system that seeks the active participation of the people impacted by the distribution of funds in the processes for deciding how the funds are distributed. The RTF members were elected by residents of South LA who attend Best Start Local Council meetings in West Athens, Compton/E. Compton, Broadway Manchester and Watts/Willowbrook.

Mothers Rising for Guaranteed Basic Income

A qué daremos seguimiento

Beneficios de Mothers Rising for Guaranteed Basic Income
Compton, Broadway Manchester y Watts/Willowbrook.
