OVERVIEW

Join us for a dynamic gathering of organizations and leaders working to advance maternal and infant health in Los Angeles County.

The convening will mark the launch of the ReImagine MotherHood Coalition and invite participants into a shared commitment to end infant and maternal mortality in LA County by 2050.

Founded in 2025, the Coalition brings together a 21-organization Steering Committee and a growing network of partners addressing some of the most urgent maternal and infant health disparities in Los Angeles County.

This includes disparities affecting Black mothers, who are 4x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than other populations in LA County. This convening will grapple with the tension of centering Black infant and maternal mortality as an indicator of the health of our country and how we might unlearn harmful, racist ideas to heal together and eliminate this preventable tragedy.

Through coordinated care, community-driven solutions, and trusted leadership, the Coalition aims to:

  • Build a network of 200+ members by end of 2026
  • Mobilize county-wide engagement through a public pledge
  • Advance collective action to eliminate preventable maternal and infant deaths

Refreshments, parking, and interpretation will be provided.

Explore ReImagine MotherHood

The ReImagine MotherHood Coalition was born out of both urgency and opportunity.

In 2018, the LA County Department of Public Health’s Center for Health Equity brought together community stakeholders to develop an action plan addressing key public health challenges, including infant and maternal mortality. While this work laid a critical foundation, the COVID-19 pandemic further exposed and intensified longstanding disparities, particularly in maternal health.

Today, the data remains sobering: in Los Angeles County, there are approximately 4 infant deaths per 1,000 births, and 9 per 1,000 births among Black families.

At the same time, global and local momentum began to build. In 2024, Rising Communities and partners advanced the ReImagine MotherHood vision through a finalist proposal for the MacArthur 100&Change Prize — aimed at solving one of the world’s most pressing challenges. That same year, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women elevated a critical truth: motherhood deserves recognition, respect, and institutional support.

Inspired by these converging efforts, Rising Communities committed to building a cross-sector coalition to unify and strengthen the many impactful, yet often disconnected, programs across Los Angeles County.

The result is the ReImagine MotherHood Coalition: a collaborative effort to address the full spectrum of social determinants of health and ensure safe, supported births — from preconception through postpartum care — across all communities.

Our Mission

To eliminate preventable maternal and infant mortality in Los Angeles County by 2050.

Our Approach

  • Community-based, participatory coalition building
  • Coordination across healthcare, community organizations, and public systems
  • Real-time learning through research, data, and lived experience
  • Action-oriented strategies addressing social determinants of health

This work builds on decades of leadership by Rising Communities in advancing health equity and systems change across Los Angeles County.

Descubre ReImagine MotherHood
