On September 14th, California’s special recall election will allow voters to decide if they want Governor Gavin Newson removed from office. Statewide recall elections are rare in California; the last recall happened in 2003 when incumbent Democratic Governor Gray Davis was replaced by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The recall has caused some confusion among voters about what is on the ballot. Here is a quick guide to your ballot and casting your vote:
What is on the ballot?
The ballot has two important questions.
The first question: Shall Gavin Newsom be recalled (removed) from the office of Governor?
- To remove Gavin Newsom from office, vote “YES.”
- To keep Gavin Newson in office, vote “No.”
- If more than 50 percent of voters vote “YES” in favor of removing current Governor Newsom, the next Governor will be elected from the second question.
The second question: Candidates to succeed GAVIN NEWSOM as Governor if he is recalled: Vote for One
- Select a candidate to succeed Gavin Newson as Governor IF he is removed from the office of Governor (recalled).
- Regardless of whether you want to remove Gavin Newsom from office, you will have the option to select a replacement. You can vote for question 2 even if you voted “NO” on the first question about the recall. There are 46 candidates to choose from (24 Republicans, 9 Democrats, and 13 small party or no preference candidates.)
How can I vote?
All registered voters in California will receive a mail-in ballot. There are three ways to cast your ballot once it is complete:
- Mail the ballot, no postage required
- Drop the ballot in an official drop box
- Vote in-person at a vote center near you
Starting Saturday, September 4th, Los Angeles County will allow early voting.
What if I’m not registered to vote?
You can sign up or check your voter registration status on the Secretary of State’s website.
The last day to register to vote and get a mail-in ballot in the mail is August 30th. After this date, you will have to register to vote at a polling place, vote center, or your county elections office. In California, same day voter registration is allowed, according to state law.

¿Qué pasa si no estoy registrado para votar?
