  • California’s Sweetened Beverage Tax: A Health Impact Assessment

The “California’s Sweetened Beverage Tax: A Health Impact Assessment” reports on results of a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) that looked at SB 622 which would have imposed a one cent per fluid ounce tax on every distributor of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) throughout the state. A set of recommendations are offered that can inform future legislation and ensure that low income communities are not negatively impacted.  Report funded by First 5 Los Angeles.

  • Fast Food Restaurant Policy in a Food Desert: A Health Impact Assessment

The “Fast Food Restaurant Policy in a Food Desert: A Health Impact Assessment” reports on results of a health impact assessment (HIA) study conducted to project the impact of a proposal that would have made changes to South LA’s existing fast food density policies on health-related indicators in the community.  While the proposal did not go through, the reports highlights the complexity of combating poor health outcomes and the need to have a comprehensive approach that is multi-faceted and long-term.

  • The Role of Community Health Workers in Health Systems: A Multisectoral Exploration

This report seeks to inform the current and ongoing dialogue about the impact Community Health Workers (CHW) have had, and will continue to have on the healthcare system, particularly among vulnerable communities who experience disproportionate health disparities, such as South Los Angeles. As such the report provides an overview of the role CHW’s play in the healthcare system, highlights evidence-based research and expert opinions, explores the limitations and barriers and identifies a set of recommendations to sustain and uplift the CHW workforce. Report funded by the California Endowment.
