Community Health Councils (CHC) partnered with the Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County (CCALAC) and the California Primary Care Association (CPCA) to host the 2018 Outreach and Enrollment Summit in Los Angeles on May 4th. Over 80 health advocates attended to hear more about federal and state healthcare policy updates, engage with a diverse panel on immigration-related healthcare enrollment issues, and learn more about local programs: My Health LA and Whole Person Care Los Angeles. The summit also provided attendees with the opportunities to engage in dialogues surrounding immigration and enrollment and troubleshooting and patient advocacy; the latter also led to a panel through which enrollers received pertinent updates about the Medi-Cal program in California.

Given the complexities of the healthcare landscape in today’s climate, forums such as the Outreach and Enrollment Summit are crucial in relaying changes to the healthcare system to our health advocates. The Summit also provided health advocates a space to share their valuable experiences on the ground and issues affecting their work; this exchange helps to identify policy and program components that are successful and may need improvements, allowing CHC to troubleshoot potential advocacy items.

Health advocates left the Summit having engaged with experts in the field, eager to share the information learned with their colleagues and clients. For those that are interested in reviewing the information presented at the Summit, handouts and presentations are available online. CHC would like to thank Health Net and LA Care Health Plan for providing sponsorship, the California Community Foundation for providing the meeting space, and our wonderful presenters for sharing the latest updates and sharing their insight. Lastly, CHC thanks all the attendees and health advocates who continue to uphold the healthcare system in the state of California by ensuring access to and utilization of health coverage.
